What is Legalpedia Online?

This site is a wiki. That means that this site is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content. Editing does not require any computer programming knowledge.

What does that mean? Well, it means that the website designer is not the only person that will provide content or information. The usefulness of this site depends on visitors to contribute. Everyone is welcome to provide useful information or update/edit existing information. All you have to do is sign in. Just visit the how to join page.

You can contribute as little or as much as you want. Or just suggest a topic to be added. Just edit the page to show the new topic, visit the forum page to suggest it, hit the "discuss" link at the bottom of the page, or send a message to the administrator.

You can also get useful information by using the discussion forum page.

Why contribute?

This wiki is about helping individuals. Whether it is finding a lawyer, getting a legal question answered, finding "do it yourself" forms, finding statutes, search for case law, obtaining court information, or just sharing your experience with our legal system.

For instance, if you have done research on a particular topic, save someone else the time and effort you spent on your quest for information. In turn someone may have done research on another matter that you are looking into and that will save you time.

So share something while you are here. This site is in the early development stage, so the content you are looking for may not be developed yet. Your suggestions are welcome!

Lawyers

Attorneys or Lawyers must be licensed to practice law. Licensing usually is granted to graduates of ABA approved law schools (althought, a couple of states do not have this requirement) who then must pass a bar exam. The bar exam in most states consist of a two and one-half day testing period.

The education needed to become an attorney is a four year college degree followed by three years of law school. The degree earned at law school is usually a Doctorate of Juriprudence, although law school may have a different name on their degree.

Each state has its own licensing authority and a lawyer cannot practice outside of that state until they are admitted into the next state. This sometimes means that the lawyer will have to take the bar exam again in the other state. However, some states have reciprocity with each other. That means that certain states will allow a lawyer admission under certain circumstances without having to take the bar exam again.

Once licensed, each lawyer is a member of that states' bar association.
